Lace shawl for a beach wedding

  • Nov. 17th, 2009 at 12:10 AM
Hi all!

It's been a while since I've been pattern searching, and the internet knitting community has EXPLODED! Because of this, I'm having a hard time finding a pattern narrowed down to what I need. Can [info]knitting help?

I'm knitting a shawl for a friend's wedding in late February. It will be in the Florida Keys, and have a garden/beach theme. She wants something similar to an asymmetrical poncho, but I'm open to keeping it open in the middle (fastened with a pin or some sort instead of attached). I'm good with just about any lace pattern you can throw at me. Plus points if it has a cowel or a Marilyn-type neckline, but not required.

Help? I'm going insane trying to find something, and I only have 3ish months to finish this. Also, I'm planning on using a light cotton yarn in a cream or beige-y brown; something that will give it a cute, rough-ish beach look while still being breathable and casually elegant. But that's just an idea.

Thank you, so much!!! <3

Downloading Optimism

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 11:06 PM

Oh man, eventually the words are going to completely take over my comics and I'll just be writing out essays by hand. And yet, I could have written so much more! Must... stop... and focus on... my actual scheduled work for today...

I drew this last night and tonight, and Linney helped. Cats are such jerks.

Atwood's new book (The Year of the Flood) is a follow-up to Oryx and Crake, which I read when I was eighteen or nineteen, and which made a profound impact. Nelly and I actually read it together while we were traveling by train, and had to read it aloud to one another in order not to fight over who's turn it was with our one copy. It gave me a serious fascination with genetic engineering, especially pertaining to the food and drugs we put in our bodies. I'm really loving The Year of the Flood, but I'm trying to read it as slowly as possible, to draw it out as long as I can (and because it tends to give me very strange dreams, so I try not to read it before bed). A warning; if you plan to pick up either of these books, you will never see scientific-breakthrough product commercials the same way, again.

I'll be at the Chicago Holiday Renegade Craft Fair in a little over two weeks, with my crafty pals, Nelly and Nora. There will be so many comics and bags and neat stuff for sale! And I'm gonna sell little on-the-fly watercolors at the request of visitors-- so it's your chance to have me paint whatever your heart desires! Whee!

Come visit us, please? See you there!

Notes: 1) I'm so glad to have finally come back to RaTs! I feel terrible that it has been over a month since my last post, though I tried to do some reading of other posts in the meantime. I hope to do more reading this week and maybe even write some more.
2) I definitely made use of the OSHA website and About.com Forestry as resources for this post. Some of the definitions in this post are definitely more theirs than mine, so I just wanted to credit them! I hope I have done them justice in my explanations

Aodh has a rare, but enjoyable experience! )

Top Five requirements for a dream job

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 10:27 PM
This is what would make a job perfect for me:

1. Doing something I actually like doing: I don't care how little I get paid, or how long I had to work; if I loved what I was doing, it would be all worth it.

2. Cool coworkers: I wouldn't want to go to a job where I couldn't at least tolerate my coworkers.

3. I would like a job where I could be creative and maybe doing something different every day.

4. I would also like a job where I'm not stuck at one place all the time, like sitting at a desk all day.

5. I would like to make enough money to live on. I don't need a huge paycheck, but enough to pay the bills and eat.

At last, here's the droid we were all looking for. In this frame you can clearly see R2-D2's cameo in JJ Abrams' Star Trek. This time there's absolutely no doubt about it: It's been confirmed by ILM.

Choverlord interview @ East West

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 10:02 PM
John Cho talks to East West magazine about being an Asian American in Hollywood, particularly focusing on his roles as Demitri Noh, Harold, and ~*~Sulu~*~.

The interview can be found here.

Highlights include:

Cho takes his icon status with a grain of salt – and his typical humility. “I’m usually a bit disconnected from what people think of me,” says Cho, who tries to skip reading reviews. “But after Star Trek, even on my street there are some young boys, like 10 years old, who just look at me different. You can tell they’re just visualizing me doing that sword fight from the film.

Who doesn't want to visualize that scene? Particularly in your bunk. ;)

Cable Conundrum

  • Nov. 16th, 2009 at 6:57 PM
I'm making a cabled scarf based on a reversible diamond cable pattern.

I've charted out the pattern here. I've also written it out below.

The conundrum is that when I started, I somehow made a mistake that makes an interesting effect on the end that I would like to duplicate on the other end.

See this photo.

I'm guessing I did an extra row or forgot a row somewhere.

Can someone help me figure out what I did so I can do it again?
